FAQ

At what age can I take drivers training and be in Segment I class?
You must be at least 14 years & 8 months old, by the first day of class, to be eligible.

How many hours of classroom and behind the wheel instruction do I need?
Students are required to take 24 hours of classroom instruction, 6 hours of behind the wheel instruction, and earn a score of 80% or higher on the 100 question State Exam.

How do I receive my level 1 license (drivers permit)?
The new student driver will be issued a green certificate after passing the State Exam (the green certificate is NOT a permit). You will take the green certificate, a birth certificate, social security number, and parent/legal guardian to the Secretary of State in order to obtain your level 1 learners permit.

Are there any restrictions on my Level 1 license?
You will drive on your learners permit for a minimum of 6 months or until you are 16 (which ever comes later). On the level 1 permit, a licensed adult 21 or over must accompany you at all times while operating a vehicle.

When can I take Segment II?
You are eligible to take Segment II, 90 days after completing Segment I. The State of Michigan recommends that you obtain 30 hours (2 night hours) of driving practice. Segment II consists of 6 hours of classroom instruction. After completion, the student will receive a "white certificate."

When do I receive my Level 2 license?
The student must take a road test, present the "white certificate", have a minimum of 6 months driving at level 1, and complete the required 50 hours of practice driving, of which 10 hours must be at night.

Does Macomb Driving Academy perform Road Test?
No we do not, there are 3rd party road testers that perform the road test.

Are there any restrictions on my Level 2 license?
There is a curfew from 10:00pm - 5:00am, unless you are working at a job or are with a parent/designated driver 21 or older. If you are working a job, you may be asked to prove your employment.  Also, you can have no more than one non-family member passenger in the car with you unless driving to or from a school-sanctioned event.

When do I receive my Level 3 (unrestricted) license?
You will be granted "full" driving privileges with no restrictions at the age of 17, as long as you have driven for 1 year at level 2, crash and violation free.
